A lot to do in Palma in January – Fiesta Sant Sebastián
The Fiesta Sant Sebastiàn is one of the biggest festivals in Mallorca. It takes place every year in January to celebrate the patron saint of the capital, Sant Sebastian. For two weeks the city celebrates with cultural activities, sporting events, lots of entertainment for children (especially in Sant Sebastiàn Petit, a children’s party with live music, workshops and other activities for the little ones) and live music. The big night is on 19th September, the day of Saint Sebastian, when a big campfire is lit in the Plaça Major to mark the beginning of the celebrations. The famous “giants” and the “Drac Na Coca” (fire-breathing giant crocodile), a dragon, cross the square to the music of the traditional “xeremiers” or bagpipers. At this time the “revetlla” takes place, a music event that fills all Palma’s squares with free concerts. Another very popular event is the “Correfoc”, a firewalk that takes place on 21.1.
For the duration of the festival there are also exhibitions, music, guided tours and parades. These days are celebrated not only in Palma but also in many villages on the island. With currently mild temperatures and a lot of sunshine, this is definitely a reason to come to our beautiful island Mallorca.
