Driver’s license exchange
Germans living in Mallorca have to expect to exchange their German driving license for a Spanish one.
Driving licenses issued after 19 January 2013 do not need to be exchanged for a Spanish driver’s license, since after that date German driver’s licenses are issued with a validity of 15 years, according to the EU Driving License guideline. If you have a driver’s license with an expiration date, you do not have to exchange it until it expires. For all other residents who still have a driver’s license without expiration date and live longer than 2 years in Spain have to exchange it. You can have your driving license rewritten in the transport authority “Tráfico”. For this you need a medical confirmation that you are able to drive a motor vehicle. To receive this confirmation, you have to make an appointment at the “Centros de Reconocimiento de Conductores”.
A fine of € 200 must be paid if you habe an unlimited diver’s license and if you are stopped by the police. This only applies to Mallorca residents.
