Easter – century old tradition in Mallorca
If you spend Easter in Mallorca, you will be surprised by the beautiful island, which shows a different side than you are used to in the high season. After Mallorca has turned into an almond blossom island in February, spring is coming, everywhere it is blooming and greening at Easter.
The festival has a great importance in Spain and especially in Mallorca, it has a century-old tradition. Experiencing the processions of the suffering of Christ is something very special, in Palma’s streets and in other villages and towns you can take part in the processions. These start on Palm Sunday in different churches and last the entire week. On Maundy Thursday thousands of people are on the street in Palma to see the solemn “Crist de la Sang”. Several brotherhoods take part in medieval costumes, traditionally with a penitential robe and a pointed hood. Religious statues are carried in the company of music. Until after midnight, the procession continues until the ordeal has come to an end.
