El Arenal in winter – a magnet for german tourists & especially seniors
There are different names for the six kilometer long beach on the south coast of Majorca - Playa de Palma, Arenal or also known as “Ballermann”. Only five kilometres from the airport of Son Sant Joan and 10 kilometres east of the city of Palma de Mallorca, there is no better location for making the most of every minute of your holiday close to Palma. In summer, Arenal attracts many visitors in search of a beach, bar and clubbing style holiday, especially young 18-30 year old German tourists. Although not as notorious as Magaluf, Arenal can be noisy and rowdy. This makes it an ideal location if you want buzz and lots of things to do all day and night, but not the best choice if you are in search of peace and silence. In winter however, the Playa de Palma shows itself from a completely different side. The beach is mostly deserted, the water is calm and quite smooth and you can meet countless strollers, cyclists, skateboarders or skaters, exploring the coastline along the endless beach promenade and enjoying the peace of the winter. All in all, you can also say, the “Playa is changing”. Numerous hotels are being renovated and partly upgraded from 3 to 4* or from 4 to 5*. The Playa de Palma is now also on 5* luxury tourism and some 5* hotels have been completely rebuilt and already opened. Also a new initiative called “Palma Beach” was launched by some well-known entrepreneurs at the Playa and attracted attention with numerous events and improvements. Numerous hotels offer beautiful roof terraces, some with pool, where summer bars and DJ’s provide the necessary entertainment. Arenal does attract an international community of residents who live there all year, due to the convenient location. Proximity to Palma and the airport with a relatively good price-tag for property makes it particularly popular with frequent travellers. There is also good provision of local facilities and amenities. That said, living in a popular resort has its drawbacks during the summer months and winters are usually extremely quiet.
