Every Euro counts – for the Lions Club Palma de Mallorca
A hot meal every day - for many people this is by no means a matter of course. Not even on Mallorca, the island that stands for holidays, sunshine, carefree joie de vivre and carefree enjoyment. But where there is light, there is also shadow. Around 1/5 of the population of Mallorca lives below the poverty line. The long-term unemployed receive hardly any financial support. Spanish social welfare is limited to a few months and “Hartz4” as in Germany does not exist.
Various aid organisations have been working for the needy for many years and regularly distribute food and products. But the demand for food and articles of daily use is constantly increasing and the Corona crisis has made it all worse and many more people need support.
“Comida para todos - Food for all” was launched in December 2010 by the Lions Club Palma de Mallorca. The largest German food discounter Lidl on the island provides food and hygiene articles from its branches free of charge and before the expiry date. Every day from Monday to Friday, the driver Marcos drives to the Lidl markets on the island to pick up mainly fruit and vegetables. From time to time, other food products such as pasta, rice, detergents, drinks, pet food and much more are also available. So every year about 260.000 kg of fruit and vegetables are distributed to over 4500 people in need in and around Palma - and the trend is increasing! The costs of the project currently amount to € 3.200 per month, which are generated through donations, campaigns like flea markets etc. or other events. In the past years, more than € 340.000 have already been invested in this ambitious project. In 2020, however, the Lions Club will reach its limits - due to COVID, all events and activities had to be cancelled and the urgently needed funds did not materialise. The refrigerated truck is scratching the 400,000 km mark and would soon have to be replaced. The Lions Club urgently needs sponsors to keep this important project alive in the long run. Even small contributions help.
Help keep the project running and keep a piece of humanity going. Every Euro counts!
